What is brake bias?

Brake bias is the percentage of total braking force applied to the front wheels. It can also be called “brake balance.”

A 60-70% bias is common on RWD street vehicles. This means the front brakes provide 60-70% of the total braking force. FWD cars can have up to 80% bias.

Why is it important?
Brake bias helps the driver maintain control while braking. In most cases, the front brakes provide more force than the rear. This is due to weight transfer.

When braking, weight transfers from the rear to the front. This increases traction in the front and reduces it in the rear. If the brakes had a 50/50 balance, the rear wheels would lock up first. This could cause a dangerous spin.

Optimal bias is when all 4 wheels lock up at the same time. However, there is no magic number. Every vehicle will be different. Bias will even change over time, depending on:

NOTE: OEM brake systems are often designed with 5-10% additional front bias. This increases stability but slightly increases stopping distance. The trade-off is generally acceptable for street driven vehicles. They travel at slower speeds and don’t require max performance.
