car brake caliper advantage
Compared with drum brakes, disc brakes have many advantages:
(1) The working surface of the disc brake is flat and heat transfer on both sides, the disc is easy to cool when rotating, and it is not easy to deform;
(2) There is no force-assisting effect, the brake performance is less affected by the friction coefficient, and the braking performance is relatively stable;
(3) The thermal expansion of the brake disc along the thickness direction is small, even if the brake disc expands due to high temperature after long-term use, the braking effect will be enhanced;
(4) Small size and quality;
(5) It is easy to realize the automatic adjustment of the gap, and the maintenance is simple;
(6) The efficiency decreases little after immersion in water, and it only needs one or two braking to return to normal.
shortcoming
The disadvantage of disc brakes is that the friction plates act directly on the disc, without automatic friction boosting effect, and the braking efficiency is low. , a power auxiliary device must be installed separately; when it is also used for the parking brake, the installed parking brake transmission is more complicated than the drum brake, so the application on the rear wheel is limited
Fixed caliper disc brake
The brake caliper of the fixed-caliper disc brake is fixedly installed on the axle, which can neither rotate nor move along the axis of the brake disc, so the brake pad actuating device must be installed on both sides of the brake disc (for example, Equivalent to the hydraulic cylinder of the wheel cylinder), in order to press the brake pads on both sides against the brake disc respectively.
Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram of the structure of the fixed-caliper disc brake. The brake disc 1 is fixed on the hub, and the brake caliper 5 is fixed on the axle, which can neither rotate nor move axially along the brake disc. The brake caliper is equipped with two brake wheel cylinder pistons 2, which respectively press the brake blocks 3 on both sides of the brake disc. When the driver steps on the brake pedal to brake the car, the brake fluid from the brake master cylinder is pressed into the brake wheel cylinder, the hydraulic pressure of the brake wheel cylinder rises, and the pistons of the two wheel cylinders move to the brake wheel under the action of hydraulic pressure. The moving disc presses the brake pad against the brake disc, and the brake pad clamps the brake disc to generate a friction torque that prevents the rotation of the wheel to achieve braking.
The manufacturing process of the hydraulic cylinder in the fixed-caliper disc brake is similar to that of the general brake wheel cylinder, so this structure was adopted when the disc brake came out in the mid-1950s, and it was still popular until the end of the 1960s. However, this brake has the following disadvantages:
1) There are many hydraulic cylinders, which makes the structure of the brake caliper complex;
2) The hydraulic cylinders are placed on both sides of the brake disc and must be connected by the inner oil passage or the outer oil pipe of the caliper that spans the brake disc. This inevitably makes the size of the brake caliper too large to be installed in the rim of a modern car;
3) When the heat load is large, the brake fluid in the hydraulic cylinder (especially the outer hydraulic cylinder) and the oil pipe or oil passage across the brake disc is easily vaporized by heat;
4) If it is to be used as a parking brake, a mechanically actuated parking brake caliper must be installed.
These shortcomings make it difficult for fixed-caliper disc brakes to adapt to the requirements of modern automobiles, so since the 1970s, they have gradually given way to floating-caliper disc brakes.
