caliper brake

A brake is a component that generates a braking torque, a force used to hinder the movement or tendency of a vehicle to move. At present, friction brakes are mostly used in automobiles, which use the friction between the fixed element and the working surface of the rotating element to generate braking torque.
Depending on the installation position, the brakes can be divided into wheel brakes and central brakes. The brake with the rotating element fixed on the wheel or axle shaft is called the wheel brake; the brake with the rotating element fixed on the drive shaft of the transmission system is called the central brake. Wheel brakes are generally used for service braking, but also for emergency braking and parking braking; central brakes are generally only used for parking braking and retarding braking.
According to the different rotating elements, friction brakes can be divided into two categories: drum type and disc type. The rotating element in the friction pair of the drum brake is the brake drum, and its cylindrical surface is the working surface; the rotating element in the friction pair of the disc brake is the disc-shaped brake disc, which is The end face is the working surface.
Disc brakes are divided into caliper disc brakes and full disc brakes according to the different structural forms of their fixed elements. The fixed element and the rotating element of the friction pair of the full disc brake are disc-shaped, which are called the fixed disk and the rotating disk respectively. All the working surfaces of the brake disc can be in contact with the friction plate at the same time, and its structural principle is similar to that of the friction clutch.
Fixed caliper disc brake
The brake caliper of the fixed-caliper disc brake is fixedly installed on the axle, which can neither rotate nor move along the axis of the brake disc, so the brake pad actuating device must be installed on both sides of the brake disc (for example, Equivalent to the hydraulic cylinder of the wheel cylinder), in order to press the brake pads on both sides against the brake disc respectively.
Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram of the structure of the fixed-caliper disc brake. The brake disc 1 is fixed on the hub, and the brake caliper 5 is fixed on the axle, which can neither rotate nor move axially along the brake disc. The brake caliper is equipped with two brake wheel cylinder pistons 2, which respectively press the brake blocks 3 on both sides of the brake disc. When the driver steps on the brake pedal to brake the car, the brake fluid from the brake master cylinder is pressed into the brake wheel cylinder, the hydraulic pressure of the brake wheel cylinder rises, and the pistons of the two wheel cylinders move to the brake wheel under the action of hydraulic pressure. The moving disc presses the brake pad against the brake disc, and the brake pad clamps the brake disc to generate a friction torque that prevents the rotation of the wheel to achieve braking.
The manufacturing process of the hydraulic cylinder in the fixed-caliper disc brake is similar to that of the general brake wheel cylinder, so this structure was adopted when the disc brake came out in the mid-1950s, and it was still popular until the end of the 1960s. However, this brake has the following disadvantages:
1) There are many hydraulic cylinders, which makes the structure of the brake caliper complex;
2) The hydraulic cylinders are placed on both sides of the brake disc and must be connected by the inner oil passage or the outer oil pipe of the caliper that spans the brake disc. This inevitably makes the size of the brake caliper too large to be installed in the rim of a modern car;
3) When the heat load is large, the brake fluid in the hydraulic cylinder (especially the outer hydraulic cylinder) and the oil pipe or oil passage across the brake disc is easily vaporized by heat;
4) If it is to be used as a parking brake, a mechanically actuated parking brake caliper must be installed.
These shortcomings make it difficult for fixed-caliper disc brakes to adapt to the requirements of modern automobiles, so since the 1970s, they have gradually given way to floating-caliper disc brakes.
