What is a vented rotor?
Solid vs. Vented Brake Rotors
Brake Rotors are available in 2 basic types, solid or vented. This is known as the “rotor construction.”
Vented Rotors
Vented Brake Rotors are common on most modern vehicles. They have a hollow channel between the inner and outer surfaces. This channel (or vent) allows the rotor to shed more heat. This helps to prevent Brake Fade.
Vented rotors are usually installed on the front axle due to the vehicle’s Brake Bias. However, vehicles with a performance braking system can also have vented rotors on the rear axle.
Solid Rotors
Solid Brake Rotors are made from a single piece of material; usually, cast iron. They are common on the rear axle of street vehicles with 4-wheel disc brakes.
A solid rotor is easier to manufacture, making it less expensive. On the rear axle, heat build-up is less likely, due to brake bias. This is why some OEM’s use them in the rear.
NOTE: Some economy vehicles have solid rotors in the front. (i.e. 1989 Toyota Tercel, 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit, etc.)
Solid rotors can also be found on some race cars. They are lighter than vented rotors and have less rotating mass. When acceleration is the goal and heat is less of a concern, they can be the better option. Drag racing is a good example of this.
Notes
Solid and vented rotors are NOT interchangeable.
To switch from one to the other, you may need new calipers, pads, brackets, etc.
Before ordering new brake rotors, check your vehicle to see what you have.
Some vehicles could have either type, even in the same model year. (i.e. 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, etc.)
