Originally, drilled rotors were used to vent the dust and gas created by the brake pads. They also helped to cool the brakes down. However, they are prone to cracking if they get too hot.
For street use, drilled rotors work fine. They probably won’t ever get hot enough to crack. In wet conditions, the holes give water somewhere to go. This can improve initial bite. However, drilled rotors are not recommended for serious racing use.
Drilled & Slotted
Cross-Drilled and Slotted Rotors provide the benefits and drawbacks of both styles. They are popular on many vehicles for their looks and performance. However, they are not well-suited for dedicated racing use.
Cross-drilled and slotted rotors are good for heavy towing vehicles. The holes help them run cooler. The slots help the pads bite. These benefits can provide consistent, effective braking on a tow rig.
Dimpled & Slotted
Dimpled and Slotted Brake Rotors look similar to drilled and slotted rotors. However, the holes don’t go all the way through.
Dimpled and slotted rotors provide similar benefits to slotted rotors without the risk of cracking.
